Kirtan (a sanscrit word meaning "to repeat") is a call-and-response chanting practice performed in India's devotional traditions. I'm borrowing the term for our Shabbat event after Alan Stein of Stargate Books & Awareness Resources* introduced me to a CD by Yofiyah titled "Kabbalah Kirtan". Transforming familiar and beloved Jewish prayers like Dodi Li and Oseh Shalom into powerful communal chants with a new twist created a new vibrancy in my relationship with the prayers.
This vibrancy is the tone we seek for these morning Shabbat circles and we will explore many avenues and vehicles of meditation, chant, and prayer from the Jewish tradition and beyond to delight in our unity with God.
