A Discussion with the Eugene Chief of Police
Police Chief Peter Kerns will discuss the kinds of violence regularly confronting our local police force.
PrayerWorks is a spiritual initiative bringing the power of prayer to bear on community concerns. It is sponsored by First Church of Christ, Scientist, Eugene. People of all faiths are welcome and encouraged to participate.
Recently, our community has seen heartbreaking reports of increased violence in our area alongside news of budget cuts and constraints in social service and law enforcement agencies. Can individual and collective prayer for community safety help? We've found that it can, and we are inviting community members to join us in an effort to support and sustain a safer community with prayer.
Our project begins October 30th with an inspirational "how to" talk on effective prayer. This will be followed by three meetings (in November, January and April) featuring local speakers working on the front lines against violence. Each follow-up meeting will include brainstorming discussion on how to pray effectively about the challenges discussed by the speaker. We hope those attending will commit to regular prayer for our community. PrayerWorks 2011-2012 will conclude with an inspirational talk in May.
Below are the PrayerWorks topics and dates through May of 2012. All events are free and will take place at First Church of Christ, Scientist, 1390 Pearl St., Eugene. Childcare will be provided.

Chenrezig: Meditation on Compassion - Sundays 9.30am
The meditation on Great Compassion and Mahamudra is a very popular and traditional Vajrayana Buddhist practice preserved among Tibetan Buddhists. The main part of this practice concentrates on the visualization of the buddha of compassion, the ultimate nature of the mind, and recitation of the sacred mantra of compassion. Through this practices ordinary perception is transformed into sacred outlook where everything is seen and experienced purely in its true nature.
These practices are based on the wisdom of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, with the aim of making the benefits of meditation available to everybody. It is followed by a teachings on buddhist philosophy by both Jigme Rinpoche and Venerable Urgen Tenzin.

The suppression and denial of emotion in general, and grief in particular, has been linked to spiritual drought, emotional confusion and certain illnesses. To begin to regain a serious and lasting sense of connectedness with ourselves and with spirit, we need to find a proper place to feel and release our grief in a healthful way.
In the traditional world of the Dagara of Burkina Faso, West Africa, the ritual of grief, conducted regularly in different parts of the tribe, is the Dagara people’s way of releasing the tensions caused by loss, and to restore continuity in their relationships. Poetry, like all forms of creativity, has deep roots in spirituality. Regardless of your religious tradition, writing poetry can be a pathway for exploring the sacred mysteries of life and human experience.
This hands-on workshop will include writing exercises, group discussions, and a wealth of ideas for finding and strengthening your poetic voice. All levels of writing experience welcome!
This workshop is not so much about the technical aspects of poetry (although we will touch on that); it is more about getting in touch with that centered "still, small voice" within, and cultivating a sense of wonder, mindfulness, and playfulness -- all of which can help us to express our true selves.
About the facilitator: Kelly Eastlund is a published poet who has been reading, studying, and writing poetry for more than 30 years. Chenrezig: Meditation on Compassion - Sundays 9.30am
The meditation on Great Compassion and Mahamudra is a very popular and traditional Vajrayana Buddhist practice preserved among Tibetan Buddhists. The main part of this practice concentrates on the visualization of the buddha of compassion, the ultimate nature of the mind, and recitation of the sacred mantra of compassion. Through this practices ordinary perception is transformed into sacred outlook where everything is seen and experienced purely in its true nature.
These practices are based on the wisdom of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, with the aim of making the benefits of meditation available to everybody. It is followed by a teachings on buddhist philosophy by both Jigme Rinpoche and Venerable Urgen Tenzin.

Shamanic Evening at Unity of the Valley

We use the simple ritual of drumming to connect us to spirit and move us out of ordinary reality to a place where we feel free and exuberant. This is a transformational and soul-invigorating ceremony designed to break through cultural barriers to grief. The suppression and denial of emotion in general, and grief in particular, has been linked to spiritual drought, emotional confusion and certain illnesses. To begin to regain a serious and lasting sense of connectedness with ourselves and with spirit, we need to find a proper place to feel and release our grief in a healthful way.
In the traditional world of the Dagara of Burkina Faso, West Africa, the ritual of grief, conducted regularly in different parts of the tribe, is the Dagara people’s way of releasing the tensions caused by loss, and to restore continuity in their relationships. The Eugene Community Grief Ritual follows the traditional model of the Dagara. It is our hope that it brings a deep sense of release, peace and joy to your life, and greater connectedness to family and community.

Poetry, like all forms of creativity, has deep roots in spirituality. Regardless of your religious tradition, writing poetry can be a pathway for exploring the sacred mysteries of life and human experience.
This hands-on workshop will include writing exercises, group discussions, and a wealth of ideas for finding and strengthening your poetic voice. All levels of writing experience welcome!
This workshop is not so much about the technical aspects of poetry (although we will touch on that); it is more about getting in touch with that centered "still, small voice" within, and cultivating a sense of wonder, mindfulness, and playfulness -- all of which can help us to express our true selves.
About the facilitator: Kelly Eastlund is a published poet who has been reading, studying, and writing poetry for more than 30 years. You can read samples of her poetry on her blog, www.starsandwillows.com. She holds a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Colorado and currently works as a communications specialist at a not-for-profit company.
