Jewish sacred chant is a meditative process of singing short phrases from our liturgy for extended periods. Repetition of the chant creates a joyous meditation with sound, and is usually followed by a brief period of silent meditation. When done in a group, chanting is also a wonderful way to send blessing and support to each other. In this workshop, we will use chanting to quiet our minds, open our hearts, and enter Jewish liturgy and text at a very deep level.
A native of Queens, NY, Rabbi Carol was ordained at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and also received the private smicha (ordination) of Rabbi Zalman Schacter-Shalomi. Currently she lives and teaches in the San Francisco Bay Area. Rabbi Carol is an active participant in both Reconstructionist and Jewish Renewal circles, drawing on both approaches in an integrative way. A veteran leader of Jewish meditation and chant, she combines the flavors of Queens, the Bay Area, the legal intellect of Talmud, and the heart-opening directness of Jewish contemplative work.

The Hebrew Bible contains stories of some extraordinary women, such as Tamar, a seemingly powerless widow whose bold trickery changed history, Deborah, a wise and powerful head of state, Hannah, who asserted her right to pray as she wished and Yael, a fierce and courageous warrior. We will discuss how these and other Biblical women claim power--and the limitations of their power. We will also look at midrashim, or imaginative reconfigurations of these stories, from both traditional and contemporary perspectives. Please join us as we explore what these amazing Biblical women can teach us about our inner lives as women and men today.

Global Vigil Fire
Sunday, May 1 at 6:30 pm.
The Avalon Lodge
5210 Canyon Drive
Eugene, OR 97405
Despacho ceremony is a beautiful and ancient ceremony. This particular healing ceremony brings participants into alignment and harmony with the physical, emotional, and spiritual for themselves, the community, and the world.
A despacho is an offering to the mountains, mother earth, the elements, the spirits of nature, and all who dwell here.
Together we will create one large despacho with over 30 different assembled ingredients, each infused with your prayers and intent for yourself, your loved ones, and all creation.
Once the despacho is completed, one by one we will ask the fire for a healing and then place the despacho into the fire.
As the despacho burns, the energy of the prayers is released to the Universe, creating a healing.
Please bring anything you would like to gift to the Despacho and the fire. (Such as candy, seeds, herbs, dried beans, rice, confetti...)
Please be sure that it is non-toxic and burnable.
Remember your rattles, drums, and layers appropriate for going out at the end of the evening for the Fire Ceremony.
$5 - $10 donation is encouraged to pay for use of the facility.

Jewish Movement Meditation awakens the body’s own capacity for self transformation. With music, sound, and breath, we use techniques of Jewish meditation to invoke the internal genius of the body’s living waters—the mayyim chayyim—and their power of self-renewal. Join us as we dive into the sacred waters of life to restore health, build core strength, and listen in together to the wisdom of the body. We will work on the floor individually, but together, in comfortable clothing without zippers or buttons. No special experience, strength level, or movement training is necessary. But it is important to form the safe space of a working group or community. This is an ongoing practice group. Newcomers are invited to join at the start of each four week period.
Evlyn Gould holds a M.A. and a Ph.D. in French Literature and a CAS Distinguished Professorship at the University of Oregon as well as B.A. degrees in French and Dance. She has trained 30 years in classical dance and has worked for 5 years in Continuum Movement.

Amitabha Empowerment,
Amitabha Practice
Amitabha Special Puja
with Venerable Lama Tsang Tsing
Each year to commemorate the passing of His Eminence Kalu Rinpoche into the Pure Realms, Venerable Lama Tsang Tsing offers a series of special events culminating in a Puja of Blessing for the Deceased. This profound Puja is rarely performed in the West and carries a great blessing for the deceased. Venerable Lama Tsang Tsing offers this Puja each year for the benefit of all beings in general, and for the local community and KDC Sangha in particular. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to benefit loved ones who have passed away (especially during the past year) at KDC’s annual Amitabha Puja for the Deceased. As described in detail below, your donations are highly auspicious and an important component of the Puja.
~ Amitabha Empowerment Saturday, May 7
2:00 p.m. (Arrive by 1:45 p.m.)
$20 general ($15 KDC members).
The Empowerment authorizes one to do the meditation practice of the Buddha Amitabha. Amitabha is the particular Deity who helps us at the time of our death to attain rebirth in the Pureland. The Refuge Vow is required and will be offered prior to the Empowerment.
~ Amitabha Practice Sunday, May 8
9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (Arrive by 8:45 a.m.)
$30 general ($25 KDC members). Text $10.
The Amitabha sutra states that even to hear the name of Amitabha is cause to be reborn in the Pure Land of Dewachen. Amitabha practice carries a great blessing and is easy to accomplish. Venerable Lama Tsang Tsing has accomplished many long Amitabha retreats; this is an excellent opportunity to practice with him. The Empowerment is required.
~ Amitabha Special Puja for the Deceased Sunday, May 8
Approximately 2:30 p.m. Please arrive between 2:00 and 2:30 p.m. for this special Puja if you are not attending the all-day Amitabha Practice.
This Puja is extremely helpful when performed for the benefit of one who has died. After dying, due to karma and habitual patterns, we have no control over our future rebirth, and we are driven by the power of our previous actions. This profound Puja purifies negativities and obscurations and liberates the deceased from samsara, leading to rebirth in the Pure Land of Dewachen. Names of deceased and donations may be submitted by anyone who has had a family member or friend die recently or long ago. It is traditional to make a monetary offering along with the names, because due to the auspiciousness of interdependence, the merit of the offering accomplishes the welfare of the deceased. Please submit the names along with monetary donations in advance. Donations and names of deceased can be sent to KDC’s mailing address: KDC, 215 E. 33rd Avenue, Eugene, OR 97405.
If you would like to sponsor the mid-day meal for the Lamas, please call the Dharma Center at 541.485.3961 between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Please continue to check KDC’s website www.kdc-eugene.org. Other events will be posted soon.

You'll be supported in your exploration by the open-hearted questions and reflection of other participants and our large, committed assistant team. The Heart of Now specifically focuses on feeling and releasing emotion; noticing and changing restrictive ideas we have about ourselves and others, including self-judgment; practicing open-hearted honesty, first with ourselves, then others; and connecting with our dreams and passions and letting those be the focus of our lives. This brings each individual wherever they need to go. It brings clarity to those with confusion, healing to those carrying emotional burdens, connection to those who feel isolated, and inspiration to those who feel stuck. The Heart of Now works well for couples as well as individuals, as each member of the couple gets time to focus on themselves as an individual, and time to be supported as a couple.
