A Free Holistic Health Orientation Class:
Tai Chi, Qigong, Yoga and Meditation with Suman Barkhas

The Cardiovascular Wellness and Rehabilitation program at Oregon Heart & Vascular Institute (OHVI) invites people to learn more about its holistic health program, taught by certified Yoga Therapist, Tai Chi and Qigong instructor Suman Barkhas.
A free holistic health orientation class will be held on Friday, Feb. 12, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the group exercise studio at the Oregon Heart & Vascular Institute at RiverBend, 3311 RiverBend Drive, in Springfield.
Suman will introduce participants to various movements and forms involved with Tai Chi, Qigong, Yoga and meditation, which are shown to improve flexibility and range of motion and increase balance and coordination. Many people also experience reduced stress and anxiety.
The orientation class on Feb. 12 is free. Attendees who are interested in signing up for the complete 10-week session may do so following the orientation class. The fee for the 10-week session is $60.

We invite you to join a meditation for peace FROM YOUR OWN LOCATION, from 7:00 - 7:30 AM and/or 7:00 - 7:30 PM if you'd like to join with others at a specific time. Or, meditate any time during the day that is convenient for you.
Rhythm of Peace is a local grassroots project that supports individuals in making peace a priority in their daily lives. In addition to a daily focus on peace, the rhythm of peace community joins in a meditation for peace following the rhythms of the new moon and full moon each month. We invite you to join a meditation for peace from your own location, from 7:00 - 7:30 AM and/or 7:00 - 7:30 PM if you'd like to join with others at a specific time. Or, meditate any time during the day that is convenient for you. This will create a wave of meditations on peace occurring throughout the day.

The international kirtan band Shantala announces a year of touring to focus on raising funds for local and regional charities. This unique tour, Unity in the Community, is drawing community groups together from around North America to celebrate in the sacred music of the spirit and create grassroots change in cities from coast to coast. Founded by the husband and wife duo, Benjy and Heather Wertheimer, Shantala has come to be known for their masterful use of traditional Indian instruments and deeply moving vocal accompaniments. Also featuring John Dekadt on percussion and Jeff Leonard on bass.
Sacred chanting (kirtan) has its roots in the traditional music of ancient India. It is growing rapidly in popularity in the West along with the rise of yoga in American culture. Chanting events involve active audience participation and are open to people of all religious backgrounds. The music carries the audience through a journey of etheric beauty, ecstatic percussion, and singing with the devotion of the heart. It is a celebration of life, love, and the beauty of the human spirit.

Ladino (or Judeo-Spanish) is the literary language of the descendents of the Jews expelled from Spain in 1492. Many of us are familiar with the Sephardic song tradition, but there is also a vast literature in Ladino that ranges from medieval religious texts to modern novels. This literature was produced by diverse spectrum of Sephardic communities, from very assimilated converts writing in Italy and Holland who fled Spain to return to Judaism in the 1500s and 1600s, to Ottoman Jews who still preserved a sense of ‘Spanish-ness’ hundreds of years after the expulsion, to Sephardic immigrants to New York who published newspapers and humor magazines in Ladino between the wars. In this talk Wacks will give an overview of Ladino literature from 1492 to the twentieth century in light of its historical and social contexts.
